Look What the Overzealous Have Done to us NOW…

Ten short years ago there was a new vaccine introduced to America that was touted as being a major game changer in the world of Cancer prevention… the HPV vaccine… but America has not jumped through hoops that researchers thought they would… the reasons varied…

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) all but assured a 100% safety factor for the drug… not the FDA… the CDC… in my mind a ‘much higher and reliable power’Human Papillomavirus in one or more of its variants causes more than 90% of cervical cancers as well as most of the cancers of the vulvavaginaanuspenis and oropharynx (back of the throat… base of the tongue and tonsils) as well as genital warts

The main contender against vaccination were the ‘Moral Majority’… parents who felt that abstinence was enough of a preventive measure and getting the HPV vaccine would only encourage promiscuity in young boys and girls… they felt their deep moral background would be enough of a deterrent…

If that were the case then why is HPV considered by the CDC to be the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD) in America… other fringe generations (Gen Xers and Millennials)… have also jumped on the band wagon against HPV vaccination… and their numbers of infection have increased dramatically…

For whatever reason… right… wrong… or indifferent… the minority factions of our society have now created an almost epidemic case of the spread of HPV… not based on fact or science… but on a belief system…

A mere 18,000 light-years away, huge globular star cluster Omega Centauri (NGC 5139) shining above Crete gives a good visual impression of its appearance in the starry night. Active galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128) is near the top of the frame, some 11,000,000 light-years distant. Also found toward the expansive southern constellation Centaurus and about the size of our own Milky Way is the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4945, about 13,000,000 light-years distant just above the horizon at the right.

Also called Hanging Monastery or Xuankong Temple, is a temple built into a cliff 246ft above the ground near Mount Heng in Hunyuan County, Datong City, Shanxi province, China. Along with the Yungang Grottoes, the Hanging Temple is one of the main tourist attractions and historical sites in the Datong area. Built more than 1,500 years ago, this temple is notable not only for its location on a sheer precipice but also because it is the only existing temple with the combination of three Chinese traditional religions: Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.

Stunning Moon Dragon Is a Fairytale-Like Tiny House That Goes Off-Grid

Compiled By: Gari’s Mind from DesignYouTrust.com

Living large in a tiny home is more than just possible—it can be beautiful too. Tiny house builder Abel Zimmerman Zyl of Zyl Vardos designed and built Moon Dragon, a gorgeous house on wheels that looks like it was plucked from Middle-Earth. The tiny timber home boasts charming curves and arches, a surprisingly roomy interior, and even comes with off-grid capabilities.

As expected of Zyl Vardos, Moon Dragon was created with fantastic craftsmanship and design. The home measures 13.1 feet in height, 9 feet in length, and 24 feet in width and can be pulled with a one-ton pickup truck. Onduvilla shingles partially clad the exterior for a beautifully textured appearance. Much of the home was built by hand and is one of Zyl Vardos’ most complex builds to date.

You Would Never Guess this is a $29 Million House

Judging from the outside this house doesn’t look like much but appearances can be deceiving. The house is located in New York’s expensive Upper East Side and was designed to look like a garage so that no one would ever suspect that there’s a multi-million dollar home inside.

Star Wars Millennium Falcon-Style House in Australia

Compiled By: Gari’s Mind from DesignYouTrust.com

A luxurious futuristic mansion is set to be a force on the property market – because it looks like the Millennium Falcon. The stunning four-bedroom Alkira in the Daintree rainforest, near Cape Tribulation, in Queensland, Australia, has attracted comparisons to the iconic Star Wars spaceship with the battleship grey color and shape of the home bearing a stark resemblance Han Solo’s legendary craft.

The space age home, which was built in 2009 after being drawn up by Melbourne designer Charles Wright in 2006, has been a star in the tropical forests in eastern Australia and has even scooped a 2014 Queensland architecture award. Owner Rod Perry, 68, insists that the out-of-this-world design is the work of a ‘genius’ and it has inspired homes in equally humid climates in Asia.

9+145-Mother's Day poster

Comedy/Drama ~ MPAA Rated PG-13 (for language and some suggestive material)

Jennifer Aniston as Sandy Newhouse… Julia Roberts as Miranda Collins… Kate Hudson as Jesse… Jason Sudeikis as Bradley Barton… Timothy Olyphant as Henry… Héctor Elizondo as Roman Navarro/Lance Wallace…

Sandy, a divorcee with two young children, has trouble accepting her ex-husband’s new, much younger wife Tina. Miranda placed her daughter up for adoption at birth, but now an adult and engaged, Kristen sets out to meet her mother after some urging from her friend Jesse. Meanwhile, Jesse is surprised to receive a visit from her own mother and father. As Mother’s Day draws near, all of these lives will intertwine as these women evaluate the relationships with their mothers.

This was Garry Marshall’s last directorial role before his death… and he did it in an almost Robert Altman style in production and in writing a story very similar in many ways to Steel Magnolias

I only listed a few of the many stars in this film… and they all performed well beyond my expectations… from Julia Roberts to Jennifer Aniston… from Timothy Oliphant to Hector Elizondo… as well as the many child actors used as family members to each mother…

This is one of the most heart-warming ‘Must See List’ films I have viewed in a long time… it is worth every last one of the 1-hour and 58-minute run time… and don’t forget to stick around for the outtakes at the end during the credits…

It is this type of film that will live on in your memory not just because it was another Garry Marshall success… but because it was an excellent story… that was told very well and acted exceptionally well by the entire cast…

I give Mother’s Day a 10Q Rating

You Are Gonna Piss Your Pants…

The strangest thing happened yesterday morning as I was finishing up breakfast… a call came through… obviously a telemarketer since my caller ID identified the caller as ‘ILLEGAL SCAM’… you read it right… ‘ILLEGAL SCAM’

That had never appeared before and I’m closely monitoring all incoming calls to see if it happens again from another ‘unknown-to-me number’… I had to see what this was all about in light of the fact of recent articles regarding local phone companies doing such a thing… but their meeting hasn’t yet occurred…

I answered the call… I was right… is was a telemarketer with a ‘short questionnaire’ about how I could get an instant business loan to grow my business… mind you… I haven’t had a registered business name in over 15 years… so I kept pushing buttons until a human came on the line…

This guy had such a heavy South Asian (read that as Indian) accent that I just had to f**k with his mind… without even so much as a “…Hello…” or “Good morning…” this mental midget asks… “What is the name of your business?” I damned near answered “…Nun ya…” but didn’t think he would get the joke…

I interrupted him and asked if I might ask him a question before answering his questions… he of course agreed… damn… this was going to be like shooting fish in a barrel… I asked him where he was calling from… he replied he was in Mumbai, India… then I asked him why the business name associated with the phone number 214-983-0836 came up as ILLEGAL SCAM

Without even a hesitation he replied… “…We are having some issues with our phone system…” my reply was simple… “…The phone number you say you are calling from is actually a mobile phone registered with USA Mobility Wireless in Carrolton, Texas… better luck next time COW EATER…”

In case you’re wondering why I didn’t call him some other vile name… ‘cow eater’ is probably the most vile name you can call a Hindi… cows are sacred to them and forbidden to eat…

If they call back I think I’ll tell them my business name is Tiger Industries and my name is Claude Bawls… if they happen to still dare to ask where it is located I’ll say Mumbai, India

Until active means are available to me to block these calls I’m gonna have a LOT OF FUN!!!

9+144-Manhattan Night poster

Crime/Drama/Mystery ~ MPAA Rated R (for sexual content, nudity, violence and language)

Adrien Brody as Porter Wren… Yvonne Strahovski as Caroline Crowley… Jennifer Beals as Lisa Wren… Campbell Scott as Simon Crowley… Linda Lavin as Norma…

Based on the 1996 novel Manhattan Nocturne by Colin Harrison

Porter Wren, a tabloid writer that often stretches the truth and is well-known for his love of all things scandal. A gorgeous stranger, Caroline Crowley, tempts Porter to look into the unsolved murder of her famous husband, drawing him into a sordid case that endangers his career, his marriage, and even his life.

Manhattan Night is done in a very ‘film noir’ style which enhances its similarity to the old Sam Spade movies of the 1940s and 1950s that starred Humphrey BogartAdrien Brody’s character is as tortured as any other he’s played… and he does it well… and that’s one thing that draws me to his films…

The story holds almost line-for-line to any detective movie of that golden age of Hollywood… so there really isn’t much in the way of surprises… but there is enough to keep a fan of those films… like me… interested and entertained…

If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing Yvonne StrahovskiSarah Walker from the former TV series Chuck… naked and writhing in sexual bliss… Manhattan Night is the movie to see it… I know I did… and now I can scratch that off my ‘bucket list’… that little diversion aside… Strahovski actually is a decent dramatic actress…

I give Manhattan Night an 8.25Q Rating

Will David Slay Goliath?!? AGAIN?!?

Costco’s marriage to Visa has been rocky pretty much from the start… and this weekend shoppers faced a new problem… despite assurances that issues in the relationship were being ironed out…

On Friday evening… a number of Costco members received emails from Citibank… the issuer of the new Visa-Costco credit card… alerting them that their credit card accounts had been closed…

In at least some cases… members reported that they received emails addressed to other people that contained the last four digits of other users’ account numbers… raising concerns that their accounts had been hacked…

Citibank told Business Insider that Friday’s emails were intended to be sent to Costco shoppers whose memberships had lapsed to alert them they could no longer use their Costco Anywhere Visa cards… but because of a systematic error… some active Costco members received emails intended for other cardholders

Citibank said that the users’ accounts were not compromised and that the mistake affected only a small percentage of Costco members… the emails represent the latest speed bump in Costco’s transition from American Express to Visa as its credit card of choice… following the transition… users threatened to cancel their Costco memberships because of initial and ongoing issues

And now you know why I didn’t opt to get the ‘new Costco Anywhere VISA card’… I never have trusted Citibank… they are just too damn big… always wanting to swallow up other financial entities and then they just f**k them up…

Another reason I didn’t switch was because Costco ‘guaranteed’ me a card… from the very same institution that continually turns down every request for one of their regular VISA cards… go figure that one out… I can’t…

I won’t stop patronizing Costco as long as they still allow me to use my Wells Fargo VISA Debit Card… if they do stop… I’ll start patronizing Sam’s Club… they both carry the same stuff… Member’s Mark (Sam’s) and Kirkland (Costco’s) house brands are all provided by the same major purveyor… the only difference is the packaging…

From the 18th century to the 1960s the river and the gorge were used as a rafting stream. In spring the logs, marked with an owner’s symbol were thrown into the stream and carried by meltwaters down the valley. Since 1912 the gorge has been developed for tourists and can be visited all year round.

Is the ‘System’ Breaking Down?!?

A federal judge in Texas has blocked the Obama administration’s order that requires public schools to let transgender students use the bathrooms and locker rooms consistent with their chosen gender identity…

In a temporary injunction… U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor ruled that the federal education law known as Title IX “…is not ambiguous…” about sex being defined as “…the biological and anatomical differences between male and female students as determined at their birth…”

The judge said his order… which applies nationwide… was not about the policy issues of transgender rights but his conclusion that federal officials simply did not follow rules that required an opportunity for comment before such directives are issued…

And therein begins the legal battle that the Obama administration had hoped would not happen… the prez was hoping for this to be another feather in his ‘legacy cap’… but it probably won’t be… at least for now… and I have to say.. I feel Obama was wrongand the judge is correct

The Executive branch is supposed to administer… the Legislative branch is supposed to make the rules… and the Judicial branch is to keep things balanced… and that is just what Judge O’Connor has done… he is not allowing Obama to interpret Title IX to suit his agenda just because Congress is slow to act on transgender issues

Even though I am dreading the impending possible ‘doom’ to soon take over the White House… I am glad this pompous ass of a President is finally leaving office… at first I thought he would be good for our country… open and relatively honest… but his true colors showed…

He is leaving the White House acting more like the head ‘N’ in charge… instead of a President of and for the peopleMr. Obama… you are for now our PresidentNOT OUR KING!!!

I guess I was temporarily dead… my mind just didn’t realize it

Human as Spaceship

You are a spaceship soaring through the universe. So is your dog. We all carry with us trillions of micro organisms as we go through life. These multitudes of bacteria, fungi, and archaea have different DNA than you. Collectively called your microbiome, your shipmates outnumber your own cells. Your crew members form communities, help digest food, engage in battles against intruders, and sometimes commute on a liquid superhighway from one end of your body to the other. Much of what your microbiome does, however, remains unknown. You are the captain, but being nice to your crew may allow you to explore more of your local cosmos.

9+114-The Lobster poster

Comedy/Drama/Romance ~ MPAA Rated R (for sexual content including dialogue and some violence)

Colin Farrell as David… Rachel Weisz as Short Sighted Woman… Jessica Barden as Nosebleed Woman… Olivia Colman as Hotel Manager… John C. Reilly as Lisping Man…

In a near dystopian future, the most sacred virtue is partnership. The City dictates that single people be captured and taken to The Hotel, where they watch propaganda praising the union between two people. The singles must find a romantic partner within a forty-five day period, which can be extended by hunting hotel escapees in the forest. If the singles fail to find a mate, they are transformed into beasts and sentenced to a life of torment in The Woods.

The premise is simple… the narration is gap filling… the acting was above average… the telling of the story was quite complicated to say the least… writer/director Yorgos Lanthimos… has a definitely intricate view of what life might be like… very similar in theme and context to George Orwell’s infamous 1984… therefore… not for everybody…

Colin Farrell shows us yet another side of his acting prowess in the presentation of his character… David… a complicated man at the very basic level of his being… intelligent… lonely… yet wary of what his lot in life might be since the loss of his true love… not the moody sort of character the Colin seems to portray a lot…

The mysterious voice of Rachel Weisz fills in the narration and gaps in the backstory of various characters and minimalistic action… then she blossoms into her character… Short Sighted Woman (that’s near-sighted to you and me) as she realizes her true feelings for David

John C. Riley (Lisping Man)Angeliki Papoulia (Heartless Woman)… and Léa Seydou (Loner Leader) provide the appropriate counter-points to David and all he goes through… this is a film that causes one to think… then it sneaks up on you and entertains you… and presents itself as a viable drama…

The Lobster proved itself well before its theater release by being selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and won the Jury Prize. It was shown in the Special Presentations section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.

I give The Lobster a 9.5Q Rating

I Can’t Stop Laughing…

Mr. Lardass across the street has ‘upped the ante’… he mounted a surveillance camera above his garage door… and also posted signs on either side of the garage door warning any intruder that they are now ‘captured’ on video… one sign  even says… “…SMILE… you’re on Candid Camera…”

Besides the obvious plagiarism of a copyrighted TV Series title… several things lead me to believe that this is not a working camera… but a mere decoy… especially with those garishly loud signs…

First… it only took him about 30 minutes to install both the ‘camera’ and signs… the next thing you should know is that he doesn’t have a garage space to work in for power to the unit since it was converted to a family room by the original owner… but what made me really laugh is how he mounted it… he mounted it vertically… that style unit is designed to be mounted horizontally like in stores…

And to have the stooooopidity to put up signs… what a moronno one puts up warning signs like that except businesses… and that’s because there is Clark County regulation stipulating that… so this idiot buys a $19.95 dummy camera and 2 $2 ready-made signs and mounts them… probably because the cops that paid him a visit told him I was going to get a security camera…

So he is basically trying to intimidate the ‘fat f**k’ with his teeny hillbilly substitute ‘penis’… he is going to SHIT A GOLDEN BRICK when he sees what I mount… the camera model is the same style that US Government buildings around here have mounted around their perimeter for security

He just doesn’t realize who he’s f**king with… DOES HE?!?

In the wide-field composite of four consecutive 15 second exposures, a pulsing firefly enters at the right, first wandering toward the camera, then left and back toward the lake, with the central Milky Way rising in the background.

The town is still renowned for its historic architecture and scenic beauty and gets is name due to the many large windows of the old decorated houses overlooking the town. It is unclear whether it really means ‘Thousand’ (një mijë) or ‘One over Another’ (një mbi një) windows. Indeed, the quarter is built in a very steep place and the windows seem to be one over another.

Keegan-Michael Key as Clarence/Smoke Dresden… Jordan Peele as Rell/Oil Dresden… Will Forte as Hulka… Luis Guzmán as Bacon Diaz… Keanu Reeves as Keanu (voice)…

How far would you go to get your beloved pet back? Rell and his best friend Clarence are about to find out. With Clarence’s help, he devises a plan to find his beloved pet as well as those who are responsible for taking him. Before they know it, the pair find themselves posing as a part of a local gang in order to rescue Keanu.

For not being a big Key & Peele fan I actually like this film… a bit overindulgent with all the nigga this and nigga that… but the interjection of stars in cameo roles was a refreshing change from the stereotypical black ‘exploitation’ type film…

The premise of the story was good enough and all the odd-ball situations added a lot to the comedy of errors these two always seem to find themselves in… and that’s not a bad thing…

I give Keanu a 6.75Q Rating

Just a Short Blast…

Friday night I went alone to Sarah’s Café in the Klondike CasinoNancy and Debbie were still up in Montana on vacation and due back late tonight…

I started with a cup of the homemade Chicken Noodle Soup… yes it really is homemade… the noodles are the fatter type just like my Jewish friend’s mom used to make… that was almost a meal in itself…

I had the 16oz T-Bone Steak dinner… it came with a dinner rollfully-loaded baked potato and veggies-of-the-day which happened to be a nice blend of steamed Baby CarrotsFrench-style Green Beans and French-style Wax Beans… when they say fully-loaded baked potato… they mean it…

It wasn’t huge like a lot of other restaurants serve to fill you up because the entrée portion is small… this was your average size Russet potato… baked in aluminum foil… not microwaved… then split open and filled with cheesereal bacon bits and topped with chives… they serve the sour cream and in-house churned butter on the side…

Of course I could not finish it all… so I brought home most of it… but the real treat was that I could cut the steak with the edge of my fork… no steak knife needed here… I couldn’t believe it… I’ll have to compliment Chef Norberto on it next time at lunch… he was taking a much-deserved day off

Oh yeah… before I forget… the T-Bone dinner and beverage all totaled $20 evenwith the tax… of course I over-tipped Rose generously… no wonder she loves me…

50 Years Ago, Airline Food Was the Height Of Luxury ~ Part 2

Compiled by: Olivia Cathcart for Wimp.com

We’ve heard an endless library of jokes about the notoriously bad food available on planes. If you’re flying coach, your ‘meal’ is most likely nothing more than a handful of peanuts or pretzels. And if you’re flying via a super no frills airline, you’re getting a big ol’ goose egg – nothing.

From the 1950s through the 1980s, it was a golden age for air travel. Flying was a much more upscale affair, and the amenities were surprisingly highbrow. The Norwegian air carrier Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) released these stunning photos of the glorious in-flight meals of yesteryear.

In-flight meals were much more than just prepackaged salty snacks. Passengers were offered a bountiful bevy of food, fit for a Thanksgiving dinner. Back in the day, planes were much more spacious. Less seats meant more room for serving stations. Luxurious foods, such as lobster, were plentiful. Lobster! No flight would be complete without complimentary champagne, of course.

There’s a Feud in This Here Valley…

I’m finally getting under my neighbor’s skin… and that my friends is the first step in winning any battle… I’m referring of course to those neighbors we all refer to as ‘The Clampetts’… and that’s really a dishonor to the TV show… actually any name I give them would be a dishonor to the origin of that name…

I told you about the incident that happened a couple of weeks ago with the explosive Orange Crush bottle… of course they denied it to the police officer that showed up… but I have taken steps to keep ‘Lardass’ and his litter under control… the back gate no is padlocked and I have purchased a security camera and contacted an electrician to get it installed…

So Thursday morning I go out to get the morning paper and ‘Lardass’ is getting into his jalopy (a rusted up… sun-faded paint… Jeep Waggoneer) and I hear him say… “…We’re still here…” so I look over at him and hold my hand to my left ear… indicating I couldn’t hear him clearly… he repeated louder… “…We’re still here you fat f**k…”

Again I held my hand to my ear and leaned toward him indicating I couldn’t hear him… so then he yelled out his epithet filled phrase… I started laughing out loud… he got in his heap… slamming the door… and made his usual illegal U-turn from the curb… sped down the street and ran the yield sign almost T-boning another car…

Little did he know that my neighbor who was leaving his house had heard him…

I have always said… you don’t know who you are messing with when you f**k with me… I have other plans lying in wait for him…

Big F**king Surprise!!!

There are times when I review a new TV series… and there are times when I don’t… such as with E! Cable Channel’s I Am Cait… when people asked me about it I said it wasn’t my cup of tea because I don’t believe in those alleged ‘reality shows’… I also stated that I didn’t think it would last…

To no surprise of mine… when I read the article in Thursday’s Las Vegas Review Journal that the show had been cancelled after two seasons… but I still wanted to know why… the answer should have been right in front of my eyes…

R-A-T-I-N-G-S!!!

In its first year the show garnered an average of about 1.4 million viewers per episode… not exceedingly high… but then E! isn’t the major cable player it hopes to be… in its 2nd year… the show lost over half of its original viewer base… and therefore… E! ‘pulled the plug’… as I said earlier… BIG F**KING SURPRISE!!!

And yet I have some remorse … I followed Bruce Jenner’s career from just before the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal… thanks to a special feature on him on ABC’s Wide World of Sports by Jim McKay… to me… that’s what the Olympics were all about… America’s amateur ‘dream boy’ wins the Gold Medal in the Decathlon… the most physically and mentally trying event…

He made the front of the Wheaties cereal box… every athletes dream… Jenner became a national hero receiving the James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States… he had some success in television and movies… in amateur motor-sports events… and health and fitness centers… then almost as fast as he rose to prominence… he all but disappeared…

He later resurfaced on E!’s flagship reality show Keeping Up With the Kardashians… now married to Robert Kardashian’s (you remember him… part of the OJ Simpson defense team) widow Kris and basically lounging on his ass in their house as their wild girls ran rampant on American youth culture

What a pity… from American hero… to American gigolo… and then to American giglette… I don’t condemn his/her choices… I just wonder W-H-Y?!?

Perseid Meteors over Mount Shasta

Where are all of these meteors coming from? In terms of direction on the sky, the pointed answer is the constellation of Perseus. In terms of parent body, though, the sand-sized debris that makes up the meteors come from Comet Swift-Tuttle. The comet follows a well-defined orbit around our Sun, and the part of the orbit that approaches Earth is superposed in front of the Perseus. Featured here, a composite image from last August’s Pereids meteor shower shows many bright meteors that streaked over Mount Shasta, California.

Thriller ~ BBFC Rated 15 (for strong violence, gore and language throughout)

Rossif Sutherland as John Lake… Douangmany Soliphanh as Douangmany… Sara Botsford as Dr. Stephanie Novella… Ted Atherton as Patrick Reardon… David Soncin as Simon… Aidan Gillett as Lachlan…

While an American doctor… John Lake… was visiting south of Laos, a country in Southeast Asia, to do some volunteer work, he soon finds himself fleeing from the law after he tries to step in when he witnesses a sexual attack of a young woman taking place. But when the attacker’s body is found and pulled from a river, things quickly take a turn for the worst and rapidly begin to spiral out of control.

I first thought this would be a decent film… it has Donald Sutherland’s youngest son in the starring role… and while he probably is going to be as good an actor as his father and brother… he really needs to focus on his craft… he was like a lost soul trying to find his way through the story…

Of course he may have eventually achieved that… but after 15 minutes of boring non-development of the story-line I turned it off…

My best advice… stay away from this one…

I give River a ØQ Rating

Oh… Oh… There Goes the Dream…

I have been following the story of a potential Hyperloop project since its announcement by Elon Musk in May 2013

The plan involved a circuit between Los Angeles and San Francisco that would parallel the I-5 corridor… with a possible extension to Las Vegas… now… however… like most feats of infrastructure and engineering… including all the objections and ‘red tape’ that state and federal governments threw to derail the project… just may have succeeded… it appears as if the first iteration of Elon Musk’s dream of hybrid ‘Concorde and rail-gun and air-hockey table’ will be built in Dubai

Hyperloop One CEO Rob Lloyd told TechCrunch’s Sarah Buhr that negotiations are underway with DP World… which runs the Jebel Ali port in Dubai: “…It’s got the infrastructure… the regulatory movement and the kind of capital in place needed to build a Hyperloop already…”

While the Hyperloop sounds like the stuff of science fiction… autonomous… green vehicles propelled through pneumatic-type tubes at ‘faster-than-airline speeds over long distances’… prototypes are already being built and tested in the Nevada desert… but probably won’t be put into practical use there…

Should those tests continue to be successful… the CEO of DP WorldSultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem… indicated that he would be interested in using either a floating or submerged Hyperloop to move cargo around the busiest port in the Middle East… as Jebel Ali is currently in the midst of an expansion that will increase its total capacity by a factor of seven… an operative Hyperloop would allow it to continue growing without sacrificing efficiency…

And there you have a perfect example of what happens when state and federal government sticks its collective nose into the private sector… both states and the feds clamor about economic growth… creating stateside jobs… and improving our life-style… however… their actions speak louder than their words…

We may never see this as a viable source of transportation that does not rely on fossil fuels… thanks to all you idiots who could not see past the interests of your PACs

Influenced by the strong Pacific El Nino, cloudy skies have more often come to Chile’s high Atacama Desert this season, despite its reputation as an astronomer’s paradise. Located in one of the driest, darkest places on planet Earth, domes of the region’s twin 6.5 meter Magellan telescopes of Carnegie Las Campanas Observatory were closed on May 13. Still, a first quarter Moon and bright stars shine through in this panoramic night skyscape, the lunar disk surrounded by a beautiful, bright halo. Flanking the halo to the far left is brightest star Sirius, with Arcturus to the right.

Drama/Sci-Fi/Thriller ~ Not MPAA/BBFC Rated

Thomas Stroppel as David Thorogood… Artie Ahr as Ryan Cates… Amber Marie Bollinger as Jordan… Christine Haeberman as Melanie… Steve Hanks as Matthews…

When an experiment in mind control ends in the death of a human test subject after he turns his weapon on himself instead of killing his dog on command, the military decides to look for another way to achieve its goals. A group of grad students who possess higher than average intelligence create a mind-reading technology in their spare time. They learn how to connect one brain to another via a form of cutting-edge, technology-based telepathy. When one of the group reveals their success to the military to make money, the whole group must face the horror of their design.

I never heard of any of the actors in this film and yet the story-line held me to it… none of the acting was of award caliber… but the twists and turns in the story were enough for me not to turn it off…

The premise is one explored many times going back as far as 1983’s Brainstorm… and yet it never really gets old… probably because everyone would want to know what someone else is thinking… without having to ask them…

You could pass on this one… but then you might miss on a decent film to fill 90-minutes… the twists and turns should be enough to keep you intrigued… and they aren’t difficult to follow…

I give Listening a 6.5Q Rating

Nice Surprise…

Yesterday at lunch at Sarah’s Café I presented Chef Norberto with a CD of the cookbook I published years ago… for those that don’t know… these are old family recipes… some dating back for hundreds of years… some were from friends of our family… and some I created…

One recipe that stands out from those that were from friends of our family is Pasta All’Aglio alla Sinatra… as my mother tells the story of how she got this one… it was given to Eleanor Powell… the legendary Hollywood stage and screen ‘Queen of Tap Dancing’ (somehow my mom befriended Eleanor later in life)…

Eleanor had taken a weekend trip to Palm Springs… while visiting Frank Sinatra… his mother Natalina ‘Dolly’ Sinatra gave her the recipe… in turn… Eleanor eventually shared the recipe with my mother…

Another recipe the stands out in my mind is Nora Cavanaugh’s Irish Soda Bread… I can remember my mom making it on St. Patrick’s Day… and sometimes I do too… it is far better than any Soda Bread you can buy in a bakery or store… at least in Vegas

Chef Norberto was exhilarated to say the least… it isn’t often I give away those recipes… and he is the first chef that I have given them to… I know he won’t try and ‘bastardize’ them…

The North Celestial Tower

If you climbed to the top of this 13th century stone tower, it looks like you could reach out and touch the North Celestial Pole, the point at the center of all the star trail arcs. The image was made with a digital camera fixed to a tripod near Marathon, Greece. Convenient for northern hemisphere night sky photographers and celestial navigators alike, the bright star Polaris is very close to the North Celestial Pole and so makes the short bright trail in the tower’s central gap.

9+133-I am Wrath poster

Action/Crime/Drama ~ MPAA Rated R (for violence and some language)

John Travolta as Stanley Hill… Christopher Meloni as Dennis… Amanda Schull as Abbie Hill… Rebecca De Mornay as Vivian Hill… Sam Trammell as Detective Gilmore…

One dark night, Stanley Hill is witness to the brutal murder of his wife, Vivan, at the hands of a violent young punk. Ever since that night, Stanley becomes obsessed with finding justice for his beautiful wife. When dealing with the police, however, Stanley only meets with indifference and corruption. Eventually, Stanley decides to team up with an old friend, named Dennis, to seek revenge on his own terms. Throughout this quest, however, Stanley Hill becomes enmeshed in a tangled web of political intrigue and conspiracy. It turns out that there was much more to Dennis than even Stanley knew about.

I couldn’t justify giving I am Wrath a negative review as far as ‘Q points’ go… but it came close… the only saving grace was that the story-line was fairly decent… not very believable… but decent…

It was either the directing by Chuck Russell (The MaskEraser… and The Scorpion King) or the acting by John Travolta… proving he should retire from acting… Christopher Meloni proving he should have stayed on Law & Order: SVUSam Trammel raising the question of what happened to him since True Blood… or a combination of all of them… that made I am Wrath SUCK

Directors need to keep films like this from turning into a ‘religious and/or philosophical statement’ by their stars which immediately turns the project into horse crap… if John Travolta had never had all that plastic surgery to ‘stay young looking’… he might be more credible in stories where he is supposed to be and older man…

When a character is unbelievable or a story-line is so much bullshit that it stinks… then that’s when an actor needs to walk away from a project… which is what they all should have done… and why Rebecca De Mornay was given a top billing is beyond me… she lasts about 10-minutes tops before her character is killed…

Don’t waste your time with this one… you would be better off re-watching one of Chuck Russell’s earlier films…

I give I Am Wrath a 3Q Rating
