On Your Mark… Set… Goooooooooooooooooo…

And the new TV Season is out of the starting block and on the run… so far for me it’s a rocky start… without divulging too much… I actually expect you to read my reviews… the score stands at 2 HITS and 1 BAD MISS… and again… that’s to be expected… not every series can be a HIT… and I’m not always right in my predictions… I just know what I like

I’ll tell you this much… these are the series I’ve reviewed so far… Kevin Can Wait (HIT)Bull (BAD MISS) and Lethal Weapon (HIT)… if you know me you also know well enough that I’m not going to review any series I don’t get a good feeling about from the get go…

So far in all the years I’ve done this… privately or publicly… the only one my gut feeling was wrong about was Game of Thrones… and I have gone back and viewed some of the episodes from different seasons… my basic evaluation still remains the same… it is pseudo-porn disguised in a fantasy world…

I don’t regret not following GoT… I just hope I don’t call one that badly this Fall Premiere Season… I hope you enjoy your new selection of shows…

How to Tear Apart America…

I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention lately… but America is being torn apart from the inside out… and strangely enough… neither Hillary Clinton nor Donald Trump have said a word about it… nor even uttered a whisper on how to correct the problem…

The basis of the problem as I see it is a throwback to the concept of racial segregation in that many American cities through the civil actions that happen in them are reverting back to the ‘civil liberty’ mentality of the 1950s and 1960s… it’s becoming another age of Black vs. White… an all I can think of is how much the KKK must be laughing at the rest of us…

Many celebrities… Black and White… have commented on how America is on the verge of a racial war… I ask… “WHY?”

It seems that in this day and age of political freedom and expression that if something doesn’t go your way… you protest… unfortunately… many of those protests recently erupt into all-out riots… just take a look back at Baltimore, MDFerguson, MO or just this week at Charlotte, NC… all areas of high racial tension…

We say we are more tolerant now having despised the ways of the Ku Klux Klan and Louis Farrakhan… yet that’s what’s happening… and it’s a crying ass shame… unfortunately… I believe unless something is done of a major consequence to each and everyone who riots or causes civil unrest… we are doomed to soon be a Federal Police State… or worse…

Don’t believe me?!? Go read George Orwell’s 1984Now who’s laughing???

–  –  –  –  –     –  –  –  –  –     –  –  –  –  –

Why So Desperate?

Have you ever noticed that some political candidates coming up for election in November are getting desperate? WHY?!? The answer to that can be summed up in one word… M-O-N-E-Y

I guess a $135,000/year retirement salary for life isn’t enough… it must be those deep pockets of every rat bastard that helped get these money-grubbing bastards elected in the first place…

And here is the easiest way to know who the greediest… most selfish… egotistical politicians I’m speaking of… just check the amount of election propaganda mailed to you every week…

Who’s the winner in this house… none other than Joe HeckRepublican… owned by most of Wall Street… the man who got nothing done as a Congressman… who sends this household no less than 3-5 pieces of election propaganda per week

At least I’m recycling his B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T

Five Planets and the Moon over Australia

It is not a coincidence that planets line up. That’s because all of the planets orbit the Sun in (nearly) a single sheet called the plane of the ecliptic. When viewed from inside that plane, the planets all appear confined to a single band. It is a coincidence, though, when several of the brightest planets all appear in nearly the same direction. Recently Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus and the Moon were all imaged together, just before sunset, from Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia. A second band is visible across the top of this tall image, the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy.

9202-andron-the-black-labyrinthAction/Sci-Fi ~ MPAA Rated R (for language and some violence)

Alec Baldwin as Adam… Danny Glover as Chancellor Gordon… Michelle Ryan as Elanor… Leo Howard as Alexander… Gale Howard as Julian…

In the year 2154, a group of young men and women awake in a dark claustrophobic maze. They don’t remember who they are or how they got stuck in the Black Labyrinth of ANDRON. The group must learn to decipher codes, understand the signals and beat the tests in this mysterious and bizarre place. Out of necessity they struggle to form a bond to survive, while the outside world watches and wagers on their fate.

This is the type of film where good actors go when they have nothing else to do… or it would seem that way… we all know that Danny Glover and Alec Baldwin have done better roles in better films… so why were they in this mediocre waste of celluloid…

I could have played their roles better… but then I don’t always lay all the blame on the actors for their performances… granted they… or their agents accepted the parts… but someone had to write the script… someone had to direct the actors… and someone had to finance the film with the studio’s approval…

The story was fair at its best… the directing was amateurish at its best… the acting was mediocre… not only by Glover and Baldwin… but by all the unknowns in lead roles… which resulted in this ‘you can miss it if you want’ exercise in futility…

I give Andron – The Black Labyrinth a 2.5Q Rating

The Headaches are Finally Over…

Or at least we all hope so… I know many of you have switched to Windows 10… even after all the bullshit and grief that Microsoft put you through during your upgrade… and pressuring the rest of us to switch through subversive measures… well… according to Microsoft… or at least that’s what they say…

We know they have lied to the public in the past… and I wouldn’t have trusted them now except that in yesterday’s bundle of Windows Updates there it was KB3179949… the alleged update that is there to remove all those pesky urgings to upgrade to Windows 10

My inside sources refute what Windows says is the reason for KB3179949… Microsoft says it was a voluntary procedure since the ‘Free Windows 10 Update’ time frame had elapsed… insiders speculate that the real reason was the rumor of a massive Class Action Lawsuit against Microsoft involving several millions of people and MS didn’t want to lose money on a possible lost lawsuit…

I can’t confirm nor deny the allegations set forth by my contacts… however… if the kettle is black

As for the rest of you who may have already upgraded to Windows 10… be happy with all those ‘forced’ updates… I still get to choose which I want… like the one I dumped yesterday that dealt with time-zone changes in Russia… I got to ignore that one… Windows 10 users COULDN’T

The Wide and Deep Lagoon

Ridges of glowing interstellar gas and dark dust clouds inhabit the turbulent, cosmic depths of the Lagoon Nebula. The bright star forming region is about 5,000 light-years distant. But it still makes for a popular stop on telescopic tours of the constellation Sagittarius, toward the center of our Milky Way Galaxy. Dominated by the telltale red emission of ionized hydrogen atoms recombining with stripped electrons, this stunning, deep view of the Lagoon is nearly 100 light-years across. Right of center, the bright, compact, hourglass shape is gas ionized and sculpted by energetic radiation and extreme stellar winds from a massive young star.

9171-all-the-way-posterBiography/Drama/History/TV Movie ~ Parental Guidance Rating TV-14 (for language throughout)

Bryan Cranston as President Lyndon B. Johnson… Anthony Mackie as Martin Luther King, Jr… Melissa Leo as First Lady Lady Bird Johnson… Bradley Whitford as Vice President Hubert Humphrey… Stephen Root as J. Edgar Hoover…

Based on events of the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson

After the assassination of JFK, Lyndon B. Johnson is now president. He struggles to continue JFK’s work and pass the Civil Rights Act which JFK created to give all people equal voting, public facility, and education access. To do this he must go up against significant opposition, including from within his own party. Along the way, viewers will see LBJ as he truly was: his temper, his language, and his personal motivations.

Less than five minutes into All the Way I immediately felt this was going on my ‘Must See List’ and I was not disappointed… the facts of those times drive the story… it is how writer Robert Schenkkan (Pump Up the VolumeThe Quiet AmericanThe Andromeda Strain) crafted the story and dialogue based on records from those years…

Then the surprise came from usual comedy director Jay Roach (Meet the ParentsMeet the FockersAustin Powers franchise) coaxed and drew a commanding evocatively dramatic performance from such a large ensemble cast as would be required fo,r such a film…

To say the Bryan Cranston has outdone himself in his role as President Lyndon Johnson is like saying the Empire State Building is tall… and he excellent support from Bradley WhitfordRay WiseAnthony MackieMelissa LeoStephen Root and Frank Langella

All gave compelling performances which not only told the story of LBJ’s presidency… but of all the goings-on behind-the-scenes in Washington that the public suspects… and often finds out years after the fact… the long tangled process of making a bill into a law and all the wheeling and dealing that goes on to get it done…

All the Way also highlights Johnson’s bid to be elected President after succeeding to the office following John Kennedy’s assassination… it wasn’t an easy undertaking and it took its toll on the man… you would not be wasting your time viewing such commanding performances that tell a gripping reality of a tense part of American history

I give All the Way a 10Q Rating

Kevin James as Kevin Gable… Erinn Hayes as Donna Gable… Taylor Spreitler as Kendra Gable… Ryan Cartwright as Chale… Lenny Venito as Duffy… Gary Valentine as Kyle…

However, he soon discovers that the challenges he faces at home with his family are much tougher than what he had faced on the job.

I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants… Kevin James is back and I think he’s better than when he was in King of Queens… situation after situation arises to keep him on his toes… while the professional critics have only given Kevin Can Wait a mediocre reception…

It’s Finally Happening…

Actually… it’s been going on for a while… but I wanted to give Hillary and Donald the benefit of the doubt… it just seems that the more each opens his or her mouth… we get a better example of how they may no be fit to be the leader of our country…

And we know which one may be the more verbose… don’t we… again let me remind you… I’m am not for either designated nominee… but some things should be pointed out from a rational point of view

For instance… Donald Trump was one of the first to call the recent explosions in New Jersey and New York a ‘terrorist bombing’… even before all the evidence was in… a rather rash move that in this instance he happened to be right… but what if he wasn’t

Would you really want him as your President… a man prone to rash and premature statements that could lead us into a major military conflict with whomever he might offend… like he did the President of Mexico recently…

And on the flip side of the coin we have Hillary who purportedly lies about anything of substance… what if she were President and got caught in one of those lies involving a foreign country… friend or foe… their toes would definitely be stepped on…

So what’s the alternative to standing up for either one of them… I know right now my vote is heavily leaning toward ‘None of the Above’… but that won’t solve anything now… will it… unless I could convince every voter in the country to follow suit… each of us has to do what we feel is right…

Then learn to live with the results… and not complain about itnor place blame

A little spacecraft that was presumed lost has now been found. In 2014, the Philae lander slowly descended from its parent Rosette spacecraft to the nucleus of Comet C67/P Churyumov-Gerasimenko. At the surface, after a harpoon malfunction, the lander bounced softly twice and eventually sent back images from an unknown location. Earlier this month, though, Rosette swooped low enough to spot its cub. The meter-sized Philae is seen on the far right of the main image, with inset images showing both a zoom out and a zoom in. At the end of this month, Rosette itself will be directed to a hard landing on 67P, bringing the mission to an end.

Crime/Drama/Mystery ~ MPAA Rated R (for graphic nudity, some strong sexual content, language and brief drug use)

Tilda Swinton as Marianne Lane… Matthias Schoenaerts as Paul De Smedt… Ralph Fiennes as Harry Hawkes… Dakota Johnson as Penelope Lanier…

A legendary rock star, Marianne and her partner, a famous filmmaker, Paul, vacation on Pantelleria, a volcanic island near Italy. Their sunny, quiet vacation is disrupted by the arrival of a record producer and previous love interest Harry, as well as his daughter Penelope. The nostalgia and interpersonal drama of reunion spiral into complications for Marianne and Harry in their other relationships with Paul and Penelope. Each step brings them dangerously closer to detonation and violence in an idyllic setting.

This is very much an actor’s film and Ralph Fiennes does a splendid job as the over-enthusiastic… noisy Harry… I wanted to punch him after about five minutes… Dakota Johnson does her best with the standard femme fatale role and Matthias Schoenaerts is perfectly competent… star of the show is definitely Tilda Swinton

She has very few lines (her character is supposed to refrain from speaking after a throat operation) but as she’s in most scenes is required to get Marianne’s opinions across through facial expression… miming and sheer force of personality… which she manages splendidly…

This is an engrossing film… with an interesting plot… good acting and lovely scenery and not just of the countryside variety either… all four leads get their clothes off at some point… although I could have done with fewer such scenes from Fiennes… it’s strange that an Italian/French co-production is mainly in the English language

I give A Bigger Splash a 9.5Q Rating

Here’s Something You Haven’t Seen Here in a While…

++Maintenance Day

That’s right… today is one of my regularly scheduled Computer Maintenance Days… so why haven’t you seen me remind you every 10 days as I used to do… because you should be adult enough and care about your computer safety to do it on your own…

And even by doing that… by being a good ‘parent’ to all of you… some still commented and complained about their computer woes to me… woes that were directly traced back to NOT DOING REGULAR COMPUTER MAINTENANCE

And like a good ‘parent’… I let you learn for yourselves… because when someone doesn’t listen to me… and ignores good sound advice… then finds themselves in a jam because they “…didn’t have the time…” I say… “…GOOD… YOU DESERVE ALL THE WOE YOU GET…”

Does that sound mean and uncaring… you bet your sweet ass it does… and I don’t give a f**k… I ran out of f**ks to give… if you want to keep making excuses… keep having your ‘pity parties’ every time your computer takes a dump… then learn to LIVE WITH IT

“…You can lead a horse to water… but you can’t make him drink…” is an old adage… and the retort to that is… “…but you can make him thirsty…” and something I used to say a lot…

GUESS WHAT?!? I gave up salt!!!

Clear skies saw the launch of the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft. Sporting a single solid rocket booster, its Atlas V vehicle blasts off from Cape Canaveral’s Complex 41. OSIRIS-REx is bound for Bennu, scheduled to encounter the mountain-sized asteroid in 2018. First the spacecraft will swing back by Earth though, for a gravity assist maneuver to boost it on its way. After a detailed survey of Bennu, OSIRIS-REx will collect a sample from the asteroid’s surface in 2020 and bring it home, returning to Earth in 2023.

It is about 64km long, beginning in the Southern Alps, emerging from the narrow Hokitika Gorge after merging with the Whitcombe River, and flowing into the Tasman Sea just south of the town of Hokitika. The park offers hunting opportunities for red deer, chamois and tahr. The popular Copland Track runs upstream from the Karangarua River Bridge. Along with the mountain scenery visible from the track, there are hot springs at Welcome Flat Hut.

Crime/Drama/Mystery ~ MPAA Rated R (for violence and bloody images throughout, sexuality, nudity and language)

Anthony Hopkins as John Clancy… Colin Farrell as Charles Ambrose… Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Agent Joe Merriweather… Abbie Cornish as Agent Katherine Cowles… Janine Turner as Elizabeth Clancy…

A retired physician with psychic powers, John Clancy, teams up with a pair of FBI agentsJoe Merriweather and Katherine Cowles, on the hunt for a serial murderer, Charles Ambrose, terrorizing New York City. The doctor and his law enforcement agents are in for a dangerous journey as they track the perpetrator of the series of unusual murders, who has mystic abilities of his own.

Reported as being genre bending… addressing philosophical questions about the nature of life and death… while presenting a unique take on serial killer thrillers…. would all be reasons for me to take a pass on Solace… but I waited for weeks for its DVD release…

Anthony Hopkins is fantastic in this role… very emotional… very driven… the Anthony Hopkins of old… supported in his search for the serial killer by Jeffrey Dean Morgan whom almost anyone who watches TV will recognize… he has a certain earthiness about his persona… and Abbie Cornish who is known mainly for her stint in the TV mini-series Klondike… adds that certain ‘female touch’ needed to balance out Hopkins’ character…

Colin Farrell’s participation… other than being implied or in the shadows… was limited to the final 20-30 minutes and he shone as only he can in the role of the ice-cold serial killer… you really want to see him dead…

All in all a very enjoyable thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat and engaged for its entirety…

I give Solace a 9.5Q Rating

Curiosity at Murray Buttes on Mars

As NASA’s robotic Curiosity rover continues rolling across Mars, it is now approaching Murray Buttes. Several of the 15-meter high buttes are visible ahead in this horizontally compressed 360-degree across image taken inside Gale Crater. The buttes are thought similar to Earth buttes in that they are capped with dense rock that is relatively resistant to erosion. In the image center is Curiosity’s ‘arm’ and ‘hand’ used to examine rocks up close, drill into rocks, and collect samples. Curiosity has reached its four year anniversary on Mars and has been cleared to spend the next two years further exploring the slopes of Mount Sharp, the peak of which is the distant light-colored structure visible on the far left.

Thriller ~ BBFC Rated 18 (for very strong language, strong violence and gory images)

Ziaf Abaza as Salah… Ewen MacIntosh as Nigel… Lucinda Rhodes Thakrar s Police Officer… Reece Noi as Mark… Scot Williams as Jason Brown…

After his father is killed in an altercation with drunken thugs, Salah’s fate is sealed in a fight with an angry customer. With a dead body on his hands the novice kebab shop owner turns vigilante disposing of the body in the one place he knows best…the kebabs. Salah watches gullible customers devour the new flesh kebabs and seizes the opportunity to seek revenge on abusive drunken binge drinkers, killing off those he deems punishable.

“…A gritty urban Sweeney Todd inspired horror set in a British Kebab Shop plagued by binge drinking culture…” or so the review sites said… it was about a British Kebab Shop… and may have been inspired by Sweeney Todd… but that’s where the comparison came to a screeching-ass halt…

The acting was stilted and rightly so since it appears that the producers use people off the street instead of professional actors… it is a bit gory but those scenes are totally unrealistic… during the dismembering of the victims… blood is splattered everywhere… NONONO

You cannot have blood spatter from a corpse… the heart isn’t pumping anymore and the blood just oozes out… then there is the matter of turning the ‘kills’ into Kabab meat resembling lamp or beef… it doesn’t ooze out of the grinder looking like fresh liver being ground with added blood for effect…

As Salah begins feeding it to his rowdy customers… it looks like sliced lamb or beef… not the bloody goo slathered together in the preparation scenes… the motive for Salah’s continued avenging of his father’s death at the hands of hooligans is unclear… more philosophical rather than ‘get even with the bastards’…

Miss this one and you’ll just have saved yourself 2-hours of wasted time that could have been used for another purpose…

I give K-Shop a 3.5Q Rating

In the News… My New CPAP…

Friday afternoon at the VA CPAP Clinic was interesting to say the least… first off you notice that I said afternoon… and unless it’s an ABSOLUTE MUST… I don’t do afternoon appointments at all… I was told when the clinic called to set the appointment to allow 4 hours for it… you read that correctly… 4 HOURS!!! I was so stunned that I didn’t ask why…

Promptly at 1:00pm the CPAP Tech came and collected the 7 of us attending the class… I was the oldest and even if I say so myself… the most NORMAL APPEARING… it never fails to amaze me how grown men… especially veterans… can’t seem to let go of the past… and some are still stuck in the 60s… and it seems that all except me have a need to where a baseball cap declaring our armed service branch and former unit

The first hour of the appointment was a group lecture on Apnea in general… its causes and treatments… there is no conclusive cure for Apnea… either Sleep Apnea nor Central Apnea… even I didn’t know there were 2 types… both result in momentary cessation of breathing during sleep… Central Apnea can be fatal

I learned I only have Sleep Apnea… caused by chronic nasal and airway obstruction… my sleep test confirmed this and also noted that during the test I had momentarily stopped breathing 70.9 times/hour… that’s serious

The next part of the lecture was a hands on ‘getting to know your new CPAP machine’ session to allow for the anticipated questions… I had none… but a few there had some… none pertinent… mostly asinine… when the tech says you MUST USE ONLY DISTILLED WATER in the humidifier part of the CPAP you don’t ask… “…Is distilled water required or is it an option…” SEE WHAT I MEAN

There’s always 1 or 2 in any VA class I’ve attended who ask these inane questions… I often wonder how they ever made it alive through their military career… if they thought like this back then… they were definitely a big detriment to everyone’s safety…

Anyway… I got my new Philips Respironics DreamStation Auto CPAP w/humidifier… normally a $1639 retail item… mine is FREE… and since I  used a non-VA regularly supplied full face mask… I’m now registered to get it FREE from the VA as well… my only other source otherwise would be CPAP.com and the inserts would be $39.95

My next appointment is in 2 months to go over the machines readout and make any adjustments to the base pressure setting… otherwise all supplies such as filtersmasks… and even new machines will come automatically in the mail… with annual CPAP checkups…

My COPD will now be dealt with by the other section of the Pulmonary Clinic after a consult is put in by my primary care physician… I see him next week… until then… I’m healthy as a horse… show me the way to the pasture…

Look What I Found…

We all enjoy doing some of our online shopping at Amazon because they are reliable… and some of us… like me… shop Amazon through ‘special links’ which support a favorite organization… in my case… Marc and Steph’s Dragon Boat Team...

It doesn’t cost me any more than through the normal Amazon link because they donate a small percentage of each purchase through the link to the organization… similar to buying through an ‘Affiliate Marketer’s Link’… in case you would like to also help support the Desert Dragons… here is the link…

https://smile.amazon.com/ch/47-4249405

Now back to my commentary…

5 hacks that Amazon doesn’t want you to know about

That’s right… 5 ways to save a little more when shopping or using Amazon.com

1- Automatically check other retailers and find coupon codes with Wikbuy

Wikibuy is a Google Chrome add-on that checks other retailers for the exact product you’re shopping for on Amazon and notifies you in less than 10 seconds if it finds a better price… plus other features like 100% money back guarantee and customer support… certain stores have item coupon codes automatically inserted by Wikibuy… and it’s FREE

https://wikibuy.com/?ahbf

2- Prime Memberships can be shared between two people

When you create a free Amazon Household account Amazon allows you to share Prime benefits with one other person… this includes free Prime shippingPrime Video and Music… and digital content you’ve purchased through Amazon

3- Turn your pre-paid gift cards into Amazon gift cards

Have a bunch of old prepaid debit cards laying around… log into Amazon and navigate to the Gift Card page… after selecting custom amount… enter your prepaid card balance and contact information… wait two hours and voila… you now have an Amazon gift card in your inbox…

PS- Try that on iTunes… you can’t do it… I know… I tried…

4- Camel Camel Camel alerts you when prices drop

Stop checking your wish list items every day to see if the price dropped… with Camel Camel Camel you can monitor the price on millions of Amazon products and receive alerts when prices drop… many product categories… like clothing… are very seasonal and see mass reductions during certain times of year…

5- Free photo storage with Amazon Prime

Quit paying for Dropbox and Google Drive… use your Amazon Prime membership to receive an unlimited amount of photo storage with access on ANY DEVICE… if you upload photos online this feature will pay for half your Amazon Prime membership… because you won’t be paying for Dropbox or Google Drive

Consider this your early Christmas present from me

You Just Don’t See This at Breakfast Anymore…

If you have followed the Daily Post for any length of time you know I am always describing my ‘leftover scrambles’ that I prepare virtually every day for breakfast… I start off with a 4oz. glass of Clamato Juice… fixed my ‘scramble’ and cap it all off with a cup of coffee…

However… the other day I had an urge for something different so instead of my ‘scramble’ I had a bowl of bran flakes with some fresh Blueberries and some half-an-half… yeah… I like to live on the edge…

While eating breakfast that day I began to think back about my childhood and realized that there are several things missing from breakfasts today… and I’ve narrowed down the list to the six most prominent… so here we go into the land of ‘what once was’

Freshly squeezed juice– I remember my mom would drag out that glass juicer… slice some oranges in half and give us freshly squeezed juice… almost every morning…

Toast on the side– That’s right… a couple of slices of toast… if we were especially good it was made with Raisin Bread… spread lightly with real butter and perhaps some of mom’s homemade Boysenberry Jelly from our garden… or sprinkled with some sugar and cinnamon…

Coffee from a percolator pot– Do you remember those… they sat on the stove… had a coffee basket on a metal tube inside and when the water boiled it would percolate up the tube and over the grounds… the glass cap on the lid let you see how dark the coffee was getting

Cereal with real table sugar– Yes… we put our own sugar on our cereal out of the sugar bowl on the kitchen table… not dripped out of a bottle or poured from a paper pack… or pre-applied like Frosted Flakes… even restaurants had sugar in pour jars… not paper packets…

Spam Cakes– These were Bisquick pancakes with a slice of Spam in the middle… while I never had these until much older my dad would sometimes mixed canned fruit cocktail into his pancake batter for our Friday night dinners

No mugs– That’s right… no mugs with cutesy sayings or logos on them that would hold half a pot of coffee… we had coffee cups placed on saucers… the saucers protected the tablecloth…

However… the single thing I notice quite prevalently these days is NO CONVERSATION… when we had breakfast… or any meal together… we spoke politely and in turn not interrupting adults… as the old saying goes… “…children were to be seen… not heard…” and get this…

We didn’t have cell phones or tablets back then… but we did have TV and radio… and they were turned OFF during meals… not watching cartoons and supper was usually delayed until the 6:00pm news was over…

Imagine the uproar in a restaurant if cell phones had to be turned off and put in your pocket instead of everyone at the table texting… people would go stark raving mad

Back in 1979, NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft flew past Jupiter and its moons. The images in this mosaic were recorded by Voyager’s camera from a distance of about 8,300,000km. The Io image from this mosaic may be the first to show curious round features on Io’s surface with dark centers and bright rims more than 60km across. As Voyager continued to approach Io, close-up pictures revealed a bizarre world devoid of impact craters, frequently resurfaced by volcanic activity.

The Coolest Playgrounds in the World

Compiled By: Shaunacy Ferro for mental_floss.com

The modern playground is, to be honest, sort of boring. The bright-colored, safety-engineered plastic of cookie-cutter prefabricated jungle gyms can’t make up for the thrilling fun of admittedly rickety seesaws, slick metal slides that burned on sunny days, and super-fast merry-go-rounds.

And that’s terrible for kids. Scientists have found that playing is integral to developing a healthy brain and body. One study from a pair of Norwegian psychologists concluded that taking risks (and overcoming them) during play is an important part of child development and that preventing children from encountering risks may lead them to develop anxiety. Thus, playgrounds where children can climb high, spin fast and potentially hurt themselves aren’t just more fun — they’re better for childhood development.

We’ve all listened to the evening news on TV at one time or another in our lives. I’m sure like me, you’ve often wondered what the report would be like if it were uncensored. Apparently in Europe they aren’t. This Irish reporter should get a Pulitzer for getting through this without laughing.

Drama/Sport ~ Not Rated by MPAA or BBFC

Johnny Simmons as Hopper Gibson… Ethan Hawke as Hopper Sr… Paul Giamatti as Dr. Mobley… Yul Vazquez as Eddie Soler… Sophie Kennedy Clark as Dorothy Boyer…

Hopper Gibson has it all – he’s a pitcher in the major leagues. As a rookie, though, he can’t seem to find a team to find his own. He’s downgraded to the minor leagues and starts seeing a sports psychologist who has unorthodox methods. Through his sessions, Gibson and the psychologist uncover conflict that are buried deep. Gibson is struggling with problems between himself and his overbearing, pushy father.

Boring… Boring… Boring… I didn’t last 10 minutes into The Phenom… I have never heard of Johnny Simmons… and even with good performances by Paul Giamatti and Ethan Hawke reported by critics… this was still an agonizingly slow film…

I give The Phenom a 0Q Rating

Sometimes Assholes Need to be Taught a Lesson

I don’t walk with a limp or anything ‘obvious’… although at times I still use my cane… but not on this day

Just as I closed my truck door and stuck my key in the ignition… a loud thud made me jump and look at my side-view window which now appeared to have coffee streaming down it…

“…WTF…” I muttered to myself… but before I could even begin to process what had just happened… the woman who threw the coffee cup made the situation very clear…

She began screaming at me… “…Get the f**k out of the handicapped spot… you loser… you have legs… so use them… I watched you walk in and out of the store and you are a lazy excuse for a human being… I’ve taken down your license plate number and have called the police… YOU ARE GOING TO HELL…”

I’m used to being in this situation by now and admittedly past the point of mature restraint because it happens so often… so I told the woman that I would save her a seat in hell… which she would be occupying very soon if she didn’t get out of my way… then I took my cane in hand and put it through her windshield

As I got back in my truck I said to her… “…You’d better move your lard-ass out of my way before I run you over… what you can’t see you bigoted bitch is the problem in my lungs which allows me to use this space…” then I got in my truck and slowly began to back out of the spot and hoped she moved in time… because I would have run her ass over if she didn’t move…

Like I’ve said many times before… when you f**k with me… YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE IN FOR…”

The Whirlpool Galaxy and Beyond

Follow the handle of the Big Dipper away from the dipper’s bowl, until you get to the handle’s last bright star. Then, just slide your telescope a little south and west and you might find this stunning pair of interacting galaxies, the 51st entry in Charles Messier’s famous catalog. Perhaps the original spiral nebula, the large galaxy with well-defined spiral structure is also cataloged as NGC 5194. Its spiral arms and dust lanes clearly sweep in front of its companion galaxy NGC 5195 (left). The pair are about 31,000,000 light-years distant and officially lie within the angular boundaries of the small constellation Canes Venatici.

Dragon’s Blood Trees ~ Socotra Island, Yemen

Socotra is considered the jewel of biodiversity in the Arabian Sea. In the 1990s, a team of United Nations biologists conducted a survey of the archipelago’s flora and fauna. They counted nearly 700 endemic species, found nowhere else on earth. One of the most striking of Socotra’s plants is the Dragon’s Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari), which is a strange-looking, umbrella-shaped tree. Its red sap was thought to be the dragon’s blood of the ancients, sought after as a dye, and today used as paint and varnish.

9163-the-jungle-book-posterAdventure/Drama/Family ~ MPAA Rated PG (for some sequences of scary action and peril)

Neel Sethi as Mowgli… Ritesh Rajan as Mowgli’s father…

Voice cast: Bill Murray as Baloo… Ben Kingsley as Bagheera… Idris Elba as Shere Khan… Lupita Nyong’o as Raksha… Scarlett Johansson as Kaa… Giancarlo Esposito as Akela… Christopher Walken as King Louie… Garry Shandling as Ikki… Brighton Rose as Grey Brother…

Based on Rudyard Kipling’s eponymous collective works and inspired by Walt Disney’s 1967 animated film The Jungle Book

The story centers on a young boy named Mowgli and his life being raised in the jungle by various jungle animals, including a bear, panther, and wolves. The Jungle Book is a coming of age story telling the trials and tribulations that young Mowgli goes through as he learns his place in the world, among animals who look very different from him and act very differently from how he acts as well.

A modern retelling of the Disney classic featuring updated CGI animation and stunning new effects… which by no surprise catapults The Jungle Book to my ‘Must See List’Neel Sethi did an outstanding job basically acting alone… almost all the other characters were CGI… this kid has some chops…

I never saw the Disney original… but I knew the story… this is just another one of those great Disney animated feature films that will go down in history…

I give The Jungle Book a 10Q Rating
