Catchy Storefront Names

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Even though texting and cell phone use while driving in many states across the land is against the law… it appears that too few police departments fully enforce those laws… and when they do… the fines are so low… even for multiple offenses… that drivers don’t care… because obviously they continue to violate the laws…

I have always been a proponent of stiffer fines for texting and cell phone use while driving… even for the first offense… I have continually emailed my State elected officials and proposed that they should amend the law to enforce higher fines…

Here in Nevada the fine for the first offense is $25T-W-E-N-T-Y-F-I-V-E D-O-L-L-A-R-S… who the hell is going to stop texting and/or talking while driving at that rate… N-O-B-O-D-Y… I have proposed that the first offense should be a $2500 fine… and if it is part of a moving violation… add on a 5-year driver’s license suspension

When I was a kid the greatest deterrent for not doing something wrong… was the fear of what the punishment from my parents would be… and yes… I had to learn the hard way… but I never violated my parents’ rules ever again… fear often makes people stop-and-think before they do… at least it used to…

These days they feel invincible… after all… all they know is that the worst punishment they ever got was to go sit in time-out and think about what they did… or have a talk with mom or dad… yeah… like that works… NOT

And if you think I’m the only one that feels this way… you are abso-fucking-lutely WRONG… take a look…

Say what you will about foreign countries… but there’s a lot to be learned from themyou figure it out

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I love riling people up because of their stooooopidity… it’s so easy to do… because they base their arguments on emotion instead of cold hard facts… I got into a discussion at lunch the other day with someone I hadn’t seen for a while… he always chided be before during the Obama era because he knew I stood for what President Obama stood for… change

He would always say “…see what your boy did…” or other statements like that… slightly… if not overtly tinged with bigotry and racism… but I just considered the source… here was a retired casino worker who makes a living now selling bootleg items like unlicensed sports jerseyspurses and sunglasses he would buy in LA’s Korea Town

I always thought because of his chiding that he was Republican… but now he chose to ask me about “…my boy Trump keeping the Muslims out…” so was he now a Democrat… no… he is now and always was A CLASSLESS ASSHOLE… whose wife is still in the casino industry… an industry in this town that relies on visitors… especially foreign visitors on gambling junkets from Asia

I had seen the video clip below and that was what I hit him with… the truth… undeniable facts… he had nothing to say… not one fucking word

When is Eminent Domain not a Good Idea

‘Eminent Domain’… a legal term referring to the right of a government or its agent to expropriate private property for public use… with payment of compensation… and that compensation is usually a ‘fair market value’ determined by the government or its agentnot always adhering to the actual value of said private property

And that’s what might happen in Texas if Trump has his way with his obsession… the infamous ‘Wall’he only has one thing in mind… regardless of the consequences to private citizens… citizens he promised to give power back to… BULLSHIT!!!

I am so tired of using that term when referring to Trump’s obsessions… all he is doing is fulfilling empty campaign promises to feed his ego… without regard for what the people really think about him… and his followers eat up that shit like it was manna from Heaven

Central Cygnus Skyscape

Near the northern end of the Great Rift and the center of the constellation Cygnus the Swan, bright supergiant star Gamma Cygni (Sadr) to the upper left of the image center lies in the foreground of the complex gas and dust clouds and crowded star fields. Left of Gamma Cygni, shaped like two luminous wings divided by a long dark dust lane is IC 1318 whose popular name is understandably the Butterfly Nebula. The more compact, bright nebula at the lower right is NGC 6888, the Crescent Nebula. Some distance estimates for Gamma Cygni place it at around 1,800 light-years while estimates for IC 1318 and NGC 6888 range from 2,000 to 5,000 light-years.

Las Lajas Sanctuary

A basilica church located in the southern Colombian Department of Nariño, in the municipality of Ipiales and built inside the canyon of the Guáitara River. The present church was built in Gothic Revival style between 1916 and 1949. The inspiration for the church’s creation was a miraculous event in 1754, when Amerindian Maria Mueces and her deaf-mute daughter Rosa witnessed an apparition of the Virgin Mary. The image on the stone is still visible today.

Unlikely The Impossible and Improbable Objects of Giuseppe Colarusso ~ Part 2

Compiled from: BoredPanda.com

Switzerland-born Italian artist Giuseppe Colarusso has a strange fetish for making everyday objects totally unusable. Each of the objects in Colarusso’s pictures are strange and more than being useless, they would even cause you problems if applied in everyday life: from Egyptian hieroglyphs on a keyboard to a square rolling-pin, or an ordinary hammer with an electrical plug to a table tennis racket with a whole in the middle.

Going Green May Soon Become Easier…

John B. Goodenough… an emeritus professor at the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas, Austinpioneered the lithium-ion battery technology that is now the industry standard and now the 94-year-old is ready to push the envelope on battery innovation again… Goodenough along with senior research fellow Maria Helena Braga… lead a team of researchers who have developed a low-cost all-solid-state battery that is safer and more efficient than existing lithium-ion technology…

The new battery uses a sodium- or lithium-coated glass electrolyte that has triple the storage capacity of a lithium ion battery… it also charges in minutes instead of hours and operates in both frigid and hot weather (from -20°-60° Centigrade)… early tests suggest the battery is capable of at least 1,200 charge-discharge cycles… significantly more charging cycles than a comparable lithium-ion battery and best of all… the glass-based electrolyte will not form the dendrites that plague lithium-ion battery technology… the dendrites accumulate as part of the standard charging and recharging cycle and eventually cause a short circuit that often results in a smoldering or burning battery

Guess who’s interested in helping Goodenough develop the technology… can you say Elon Musk?!?

Republicans ‘Nuke’ Supreme Court Filibuster to Squeeze Through Gorsuch…

Senate Republicans scrapped a long-standing precedent requiring 60 votes to end filibusters of Supreme Court nominees in order to push through Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch…

Most Democrats joined a filibuster of the nominee.. arguing that he was outside of the legal mainstream and that Republicans owed them a ‘consensus’ nominee after they blocked a hearing on former President Obama’s nominee Merrick Garland last year… the first vote to end debate on Gorsuch failed… 55 to 45… with just four Democrats joining Republicans to end a filibuster…

Then in an unprecidented maneuver… Republicans changed the 60-vote precedent on a party-line vote… 52 to 48the Senate then voted to end debate on Gorsuch with 55 votes… three Democratic SenatorsJoe Donnelly, Heidi Heitkamp and Joe Manchinall of whom are up for reelection next year in conservative-leaning states… joined the Republicansnow just 51 votes are required to end a filibuster and proceed to a floor vote to confirm a Supreme Court nominee

Can anyone out there explain to me… as far as I can recall… it takes a 2/3 majority vote of the entire Senate to change any Senate rules… these jackasses did it with a party-line vote of 52-48… is my math that far off but isn’t 2/3 of the Senate a total of 66 votes… how can they get away with changing the rules just to get their way…

I think it’s time to clean house… don’t you?!?

It’s the Law

Singapore – Illegal To Chew Gum

Singapore is a small city that has a big reputation, for starters its streets are so clean that you could walk barefooted through its downtown area and have no fear of injuring yourself. All this is thanks to the late Lee Kuan Yew, who was the Prime Minister that changed Singapore for the better.

In 1992, Kuan Yew passed a law that banned the menacing habit of chewing gum. His reasoning behind the ban was that the streets and commercial areas of his beloved city were becoming dirty. You see, Kuan Yew’s vision for Singapore was one of perfection, and seeing things such as gum, litter, graffiti, spit or urine on the floor obscured what he believed to be perfect.

NGC 602 and Beyond

Near the outskirts of the Small Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy some 200,000 light-years distant, lies 5,000,000-year-old star cluster NGC 602 in this stunning Hubble image of the region, augmented by images in the X-ray by Chandra, and in the infrared by Spitzer. Fantastic ridges and swept back shapes strongly suggest that energetic radiation and shock waves from NGC 602’s massive young stars have eroded the dusty material and triggered a progression of star formation moving away from the cluster’s center. The background galaxies are hundreds of millions of light-years or more beyond NGC 602.

Brimstone ~ Well… if there’s one positive thing to say about this film… it’s that it doesn’t lack for lunatic ambition… this Western/Horror picture… the English-language debut of Dutch writer/director Martin Koolhoven… is 2½ hours long… has a relatively complicated elliptical flashback structure and is uncompromising in the treatment of its subject matter… I lasted the entire 2½ hours but still give it a ‘why so agonizingly fucking long’ 6.25Q

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter ~ Since it first burst upon the big screen in 2002 this film franchise has been a guilty pleasure that I have felt absolutely no guilt in loving over the years… to try to summarize the entire backstory here for those coming late to the party would be futile… I give it an ‘Alice is back and succeeds in entertaining the 14-year-old boy within us all’ 8.75Q

xXx: Return of Xander Cage ~ The direction… for the most part… is second-tier Bay-ham… with the camera swerving from a low angle as a truck takes flight and pirouettes above it… however the last forty minutes of the movie do come together in a pretty diverting way… with a nice surprise cameo near the end… I give it a ‘you have to have liked the first 2 to enjoy this one’ 6.95Q

The Great Wall ~ The story is about a legend… it was wonderful to just sit back and let someone tell a story… I nearly didn’t watch it because of all the bad reviews but I am glad I did and made up my own mind… entertaining… story worked well… acting was very good and the effects and sound were really as good as any US-made film… I give it an ‘I was really impressed’ 8.75Q

I feel very strongly about the issue of internet abuse and fake newsespecially hoaxes perpetrated by very sick individuals… under the alleged protection of the First Amendment… because it hurts people… not just the victims… but the collateral damage to those we call ‘we the people’

I condensed and commented throughout this item from an article published by James Dobbinsa veteran diplomat who most recently served as the State Department’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan and is a Senior Fellow and Distinguished Chair in Diplomacy and Security at the non-profit… non-partisan RAND Corp

Internet Abuse… Fake News Must Be Reined In…

Recent events have highlighted the degree to which the internet is being used and abused for harmful… unethical and sometimes illegal purposes… examples include incitement and recruitment by terrorist groupscyber bullying… trolling and malicious fake news… and there’s nothing being done about it

While the First Amendment guarantees an individual’s right to say many of these things… social media companies are private enterprises and are under no obligation to host material… whether benign or malicious… there is no constitutional right for individuals to post on FacebookYouTubeTwitterLinkedInPinterestGoogle+Instagram or any other site any more than there is to write for any magazine or newspaper or broadcast on any commercial or cable TV network

Society has valued both universality and anonymity in access to the internet… and giant benefits have accrued… but of late the abuses are also accumulating… many of these harm individuals… but some also damage society…

“…The truth will win out…” is a common defense of unconstrained access… but it is now clear that this is not always the case… it is not so much that fake news becomes generally believed… but rather that after being exposed to so much of this sort of material… which poses as real journalism but is intentionally false… no sources are trusted… in today’s world it seems people can have not just their own opinions… but their own facts

There are several potential paths to reining in such abuses… one avenue might be through both the civil and criminal courts… but we all know how long that process takes and usually the perpetrator is released with a ‘slap-on-the-wrist’… so where does the real potential to stem this societal pariah…

A second possible path might be to treat social media companies more like radio and television broadcasters… under US lawthe airwaves are public property and the government has the right to regulate them for the public benefit… broadcasting is a privilege… not a right and access to the airwaves is therefore subject to numerous conditions…

So if all those social media sites were regulated for content… and make the violation of those regulations run deep and not just punish the owners of the sitesbut all involved in the posting and censoring of submitted posts… and social media sites already have the ability to censor submitted posts… YouTube for example does not immediately publish any videos submitted… they are screened for content…

If you knew you would get caught and be punished for something abusive or false on Facebookwould you post it… it’s difficult to say how that might deter someone really intent on committing the offense… but it might make enough people cautious enough to cease such activity if they knew it meant serious fines or possibly jail time… especially if cyber bullying were to be considered as sexual abuse… how would you like a life-long title of ‘sex offender’?!?

And if you don’t think it would work… consider this… the European Union’s top court has already ruled that Google must take down links to sites containing negative information on individuals at the request of such individuals unless there is a clear public interest in the information being made available…. Facebook is currently under pressure from the German government to make greater efforts to banish hate speech from its site

And if that’s not enough… there is a third and perhaps most promising path… it is through the market… standards for print and broadcast media have been influenced as much by market forces as by law and regulationthese standards are absent from much online content… such norms cannot be legislated or regulated… they are the ‘voice’ of the general publicwe the people

Though Americans say they are unhappy with the tone of the online discourse… there remains a reluctance to consider seriously these potential remedies given our enshrinement of openness… anonymity and unconstrained freedom to inform that the internet currently provides… but we must recognize that the same freedom also enables widespread insultsdeception and defamation

All it takes is for you to report any internet abuse and/or fake news… but please make sure it is just that… and not something someone else told you… find out for yourselfthen act… don’t remain a part of the PROBLEMbecome part of the SOLUTION!!!

Here is a good example of cyber bullying:

Posted on Twitter 6:07am-30 Mar 2017 by Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump:

The Freedom Caucus will hurt the entire Republican agenda if they don’t get on the team, & fast. We must fight them, & Dems, in 2018!”

That’s not leadership… it’s SHOWMANSHIP… Any questions?!? I didn’t think so…

If Trump Support Drops, US May See ‘Staged Terrorist Attack’…

Noted American linguistphilosophercognitive scientisthistoriansocial critic and political activist recently opined: “With President Trump’s approval rating sinking below even the nadir of presidential favorability, it stands to reason only a paucity of the billionaire’s campaign pledges have been addressed as originally promised and his base has begun to grow weary of hollow vows.”

“I think that sooner or later the white working-class constituency will recognize, and in fact, much of the rural population will come to recognize, that the promises are built on sand. There is nothing there. I think that we shouldn’t put aside the possibility that there would be some kind of staged or alleged terrorist act, which can change the country instantly.”

Border Wall ‘Complex’ Faces Geographic Challenges…

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has found some challenges that apparently Trump overlooked when signing the order to go ahead with ‘The Wall’“…geographic and physical challenges, including the Rio Grande and threatened wildlife, will make it difficult to build the big, beautiful wall that President Donald Trump has promised on the US-Mexico border…”

“Building a wall is complex in some areas including Big Bend National Park and along the river, which twists through nearly half of the 2,000-mile border. Hundreds of species live within 30 miles of the border, including threatened Jaguars and Mexican Gray Wolves. In parts of Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, some stretches of fencing are nearly a mile away from the border on private land in part to accommodate flood plains and an international treaty.”

I hope Trump knows how to deal with the ‘good old boys’ who own that land and is willing to break the long-standing Adams-Onís Treaty of 1819 between the United States and Spain defining the boundary between the US and the Viceroyalty of New Spain (now known as Mexico)…

Dust, Gas, and Stars in the Orion Nebula

The Great Nebula in Orion, an immense, nearby star-birth region, is probably the most famous of all astronomical nebulae. Here, filaments of dark dust and glowing gas surround hot young stars at the edge of an immense interstellar molecular cloud only 1,500 light-years away in this image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. In addition to housing a bright open cluster of stars known as the Trapezium, the Orion Nebula contains many stellar nurseries.

Venice Of The Middle-East: The Floating Basket Homes Of Iraq

Little is known to the world about Iraq’s Tigris-Euphrates marshlands – an area that, at one time, covered over 9,000 square miles – bigger than Venice’s lagoon and Florida’s Everglades combined. The marshland was inhabited continuously for over 5,000 years and at its peak, it was home to half-a-million ‘Marsh Arabs’ or ‘Ma’dan’. One of the truly admirable aspects of their lifestyle was their beautifully elaborate dwellings – floating houses made entirely out of reeds that were harvested from the open water.

The Ancient Dionysos Marble Quarry (Paros Marathi Marble Quarry)

Located in Attica, Greece, this is the place where one of the finest varieties of marble is found. The Parian marble was much preferred by the renowned Greek sculptors largely due to its transparency and fine consistency.

Vengeance: A Love Story ~ I’ve got to say this about Nicholas Cage… he stays busy working… even if they hire him to carry such a schlock film as this one… while not badly written… it is barely good… but Nick always throws himself into every role… I semi-liked it and I give it an ‘I really can’t recommend it’ 5.5Q

War on Everyone ~ An unstructured mess at best… this is simply cinema showing us the utter meaninglessness of it all… so endure it all if you must… strange… bizarre… baffling… stupid… ridiculous and so on and so forth… I endured it and give it a ‘soundtrack with its Latino/Rock/Glen Campbell mix making the meaninglessness bearable’ 6.2Q

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ~ There are prequels and there are prequels… and then there is this film… and I call it an interim story because it slides in nicely between Episodes 3 & 4 of the original story… I found it quite fascinating and enjoyable a give it a ‘but don’t get your hopes up to see any of these characters in a future interim story’ 10Q…

Don’t Kill It ~ Oops… thought this one was going to be more like the 1990 Lundgren film Dark Angel… but I was sooooo wrong… even Lundgren has stooped to new lows… I give it a ‘please don’t bother watching’ 2.5Q

Nobodies. ~ Hugh, Larry and Rachel are three actor/comedians still waiting for their big break, struggling to make a name for themselves in Hollywood while their friends achieve fame and fortune… I give it a ‘sorry producer Melissa McCarthy but you missed the boat with this one’ BIG MISS!!!

Italian Pastry Chef Creates Miniature Worlds With Desserts ~ Part 2

Compiled from: BoredPanda.com

Matteo Stucchi is a pastry chef from Monza, Italy who builds playful tasty-looking worlds using only desserts and and fills them with little figurines. “A dessert’s looks is just as important as its taste,” says Matteo and I couldn’t agree more… brownies become mining sites… cake pops turn into a Ferris wheel… there’s no limit to his wild imagination… the attention he gives to every detail is just amazing…
